This series of posts will discuss different aspects of Facebook Pages – what I call “The Raw Facts about Facebook Pages”. Today….
What are Facebook Pages
Facebook was originally designed for interacting with friends and family, sharing greetings, photos, videos, links, etc., and letting your friends know what you are up to. But it quickly became apparent to the people who were running Facebook that a more business-friendly approach had to be developed.
For many people there is no clear distinction between their personal lives and their business activities, and the original Facebook concept was simply not conducive to promoting one’s business. In fact, because everybody knows the internet over the years has become a giant cesspool of self-promotion, using Facebook for those purposes was openly discouraged.
Even today FB does not allow personal accounts to be used as promotional vehicles for businesses. If you have a business and you want to promote it using Facebook what you need to do is create a Facebook Business Page.
Facebook Business Pages (originally called “Fan Pages”) are for promoting business activities. The term “business activities” should be understood in a fairly broad way to include any activity you want to promote or “brand” – anything that cannot be considered strictly “personal”. Business Pages can be used to promote any business from a large brand like Coca Cola to a one person real estate agent, author, or entrepreneur.
In fact what you’re promoting doesn’t even have to be, strictly speaking, a business. It can be a cause or an event or an organization, a club, band or celebrity.
